The Garden Spot and Mother Nature

Its starting to feel a lot like fall out there fall out there.  When it comes to this time of year I have mixed feelings.  We have be crazy busy for months now doing markets, tending to the garden, greenhouse and surviving the harvest of 45 acres of saskatoon berries.  In between all of this Greg manufactures and distributes soil ammendments to the farmers, so during the spring, summer and fall we are to say the least extremely busy.  So, can you blame us for being just a bit relieved that fall is just around the corner?

But, today after spending a week in California at the Heirloom Expo (blog to follow) I felt like just getting back in touch with things so I went out to pick a couple of baskets of strawberries.  Well I must say that the fall crop is at its peak and as long as mother nature co-operates we will be picking strawberries and I mean lots of strawberries for several weeks yet.  The plants are covered, there are plenty to ripen and the plants are almost flowering themselves to death!

So if you are so inclined and love large red to the middle and very juicy sweet strawberries you should call and make an appointment to come pick.  We are more than willing to share the fruits of our labours.
We also have available beets, onions, leeks and corn!

Hope to see you soon!

The rows in the garden are weeded and watered, and the yard is trimmed.  The saskatoon berries are exploding on the trees, and we are ready for the season.

Brix N Berries is now Open , and the saskatoons are ready for U-Pick.  We have an excellent crop this year and can't wait for you to try these delicious berries.  Harvest only lasts about a month so don't delay.

The strawberries are starting to come on.  This weekend we have a limited supply but there will be lots more as the weeks goes on.  If you want to check on strawberry availability before you come out, please don't hesitate to call for an update first. 780-980-5386

In the greenhouse the english cucumbers are  plentiful, and the tomatoes will be ready in a couple of weeks.  I can hardly wait they look beautiful.

We are harvesting kohlrabi from the garden, if you haven't tried one you really should.  Most eat them like an apple, they are very tasty.  Broccoli will be ready soon also.

PS  Don't forget to ask about the chocolate from Barbados!

So as you can see, we are off to a good start.  If you can't make it out to the farm, I am at the Leduc farmers market on Thursdays and Saturdays.

Hope to see you soon!

We'll soon be open!

We are looking at July 13th as our opening date.

The saskatoon berries and strawberries are looking good and it will soon be time for harvest.  We expect that we will be able to start u-pick for the saskatoons somewhere around 13th of July.  The strawberries should be getting close also.  Give us a call @ 780-980-5386 to check before you come to pick.

The greenhouse is producing cucumbers like crazy and the tomatoes are not far behind.
In the garden we have kohlrabi that are ready and better than last year.

If you are interested in some cucumbers now, give us a call and you can certainly stop by and pick some up.

The chocolate from Barbados has finally arrived.  It was a challenge getting it here through customs and all but it is well worth it.   If you like dark chocolate you will have to check it out.

Hope to see you all in a couple of weeks when the saskatoon harvest begins.  Its short so don't miss the opportunity to come get some of these very nutritious berries fresh off the trees.  When we last checked, the BRIX was 18 and they aren't even ripe yet!!!!

Have a great long weekend and see you soon!

Chocolate from Barbados

Okay so aside from being excited because everything in the greenhouse is now in full bloom, we have 45 acres of blooming saskatoons,  today I get the word from Barbados that the chocolate bars are ready and they will be shipped next Tuesday.

Greg and I had an opportunity to tour a boutique chocolate factory while we were vacationing in Barbados this past February.  The owner is very passionate about how his chocolate is made, and keeps it very simple.  The very best single origin cacao beans from Grenada and Ecuador, Bajun cane sugar and cocoa butter.  3 ingredients that's it, no preservatives, and no wax fillers.  Can you say yummy.  Oh I can't forget the 4th ingredient in his espresso bar which of course if coffee beans, this is my favourite!  Greg and I are very fortune to have the opportunity to travel and look for good quality food and we are excited for you to try out our latest find.  These will be available at Brix N Berries farm, the Leduc Farmers Market and also Lake Dell (Pigeon Lake) Farmers Market later this season.  So all you chocolate lovers, you have to check these out!

The saskatoon berries should be ready to pick by mid July, watch the website for opening dates and when the berries are ready.  We sure hope to see you sometime this summer whether you are looking for fresh veggies, strawberries, saskatoons or of course chocolate!!!!!!

Remember our goal and promise is to produce the best food products possible without the use  herbicides, pesticides or fungicides.

See you soon Greg & Laurie

Thanks for checking out Brix N Berries blog spot.  I will be using the blog as a way to keep those who are interested in what's happening and more importantly what's available here at the farm and the market.

The Saskatoon berries are starting to bloom and the orchard is starting to turn white.  Its an exciting time of the year as we anxiously await the berry harvest which should be approx. mid July.  Keep checking the website for information about opening of the        U-Pick season.

The strawberries are planted and with the co - operation of mother nature should have a regular supply from July through to the fall.

The rest of the garden is underway and we will have the same crops as last season.  For those of you that inquired at the market last week, and for any others that may be curious we will have our very popular corn, carrots, and flat head cabbage.  As well we'll have our regular crops of beets, broccoli and cauliflower, beans etc.

It was fun to get back to the market this past week.  The Leduc Farmers Market had a great opening day, and it was nice to see all the familiar faces from last season.  Brix N Berries will not be attending the market regularly probably until the end of June, but we will attend every other week with syrup, nuts, saskatoon topping and non-alcoholic champagne until the veggies and fruit are ready.   New for this year is our 60%, 70%, and Espresso DARK CHOCOLATE from Barbados.  Whats unique about this product is its very short list of ingredients, curious......stop by and check it out and of course a sample.

Look forward to seeing you sometime this summer!
